Domestic Violence Complaint Filed by Ahmedabad Doctor
Background of the Case
A 29-year-old physician employed at an urban health centre in Ahmedabad has lodged a complaint of domestic violence against her husband and his family. The complaint details allegations of both mental and physical harassment that have persisted since her marriage in 2023. An FIR has been filed at the Vejalpur police station under the relevant domestic violence statutes.
Accusations Against Family Members
In her statement, recorded on Tuesday, the doctor identified her husband, a Class-I officer in the roads and buildings department in Gandhinagar, along with her father-in-law, mother-in-law, and brother-in-law, as the individuals responsible for her mistreatment. Notably, her father-in-law is said to be a member of the city police force.
Details of the Allegations
According to a report from The Times of India, the FIR indicates that marital discord surfaced within months of their wedding, primarily due to personal issues, including inappropriate messages discovered on her husband’s phone. The FIR also mentions misleading information regarding her husband’s travel plans, which exacerbated the conflict. The doctor later uncovered evidence suggesting her husband had traveled abroad without her knowledge. Upon confronting her in-laws and visiting his office in Gandhinagar, she learned he was on a 15-day leave in Pattaya, Thailand.
Pressures and Physical Assault
The doctor further alleged that she faced ongoing pressure to undergo IVF treatments, despite medical reports indicating her husband was not able to father children. She reported undergoing three IVF cycles, during which she experienced significant physical distress, and continued to face ridicule for her inability to conceive.
On February 5, the doctor claimed she was physically assaulted by her husband and in-laws after returning home from work. She alleged that they dragged her out of her room and confiscated her mobile phone. Eventually, she managed to reach out for help from a neighbor and contacted her father, leading to intervention by the 181 Abhayam helpline and local police.
Investigation Status
The Vejalpur police have formally registered a case of domestic violence and have begun further investigations into the allegations.
