Police Detain 81 Individuals at Illegal Liquor and Hookah Party in Ahmedabad

Details of the Incident

Ahmedabad rural police apprehended 81 individuals, including doctors, prominent builders, and business professionals, on Thursday. This action was taken in connection with an illegal liquor and hookah party that took place at a private villa in the city. The event was reportedly organized to celebrate a couple’s 25th wedding anniversary and included arrangements for alcohol, hookah, and other prohibited services.

Raid and Seizures

The incident occurred on the night of February 4, when Sanand police conducted a raid near Goras Seem, where a large private party was in progress, violating Gujarat’s prohibition laws. The gathering attracted participants from affluent backgrounds, including builders, businessmen, and notably, doctors from Ahmedabad. During the raid, police seized alcohol bottles, hookahs, cars, and mobile phones valued at approximately Rs 2.3 crore.

Police Actions and Controversies

According to Bhaskar English, the police initially dispersed the gathering and subsequently escorted all attendees to the Sanand police station, where formal cases were registered. However, the circumstances of the detainment raised concerns, as reports indicated that the accused were provided refreshments at the police station late into the night, blurring the distinction between custody and courtesy.

Items Seized

The search led to the seizure of various items, including eight sealed bottles of foreign liquor, seven half-filled liquor bottles, three empty bottles of foreign liquor, 70 glasses, 10 hookahs with rubber pipes, eight packets of hookah flavors, 33 plastic containers of hookah flavors, 74 mobile phones, and 22 cars. The total value of the seized items amounted to Rs 2.91 crore, as reported by The Indian Express.

Impact and Ongoing Concerns

This incident has highlighted the increasing prevalence of high-profile liquor and hookah parties in and around Sanand, often hosted at luxury villas and resorts. Despite numerous raids and arrests involving professionals and foreign nationals, questions remain regarding the persistent circulation of large quantities of liquor in a prohibition state and the apparent immunity of suppliers and larger networks.

Host and Party Details

The police identified the event’s host as a Mumbai resident who organized the celebration for his brother-in-law’s 25th anniversary. Reports suggest that the party included welcome drinks, alcohol, hookah, and elaborate food arrangements. More than 20 luxury vehicles were confiscated from the venue, underscoring the scale and exclusivity of the gathering. Among those detained were several doctors, along with builders and other prominent figures.
