Bhopal: Controversial Suicide Attempt of AIIMS Bhopal Assistant Professor

Background of the Incident

The recent suicide attempt by an assistant professor from the Emergency and Trauma Department at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Bhopal has sparked significant controversy. Reports indicate that the doctor may have sought to end her life due to a toxic work environment, excessive administrative pressure, and internal conflicts within the department.

Details of the Situation

According to Bhaskar, the assistant professor had previously notified her department about her academic leave in September. Despite this, she received a notice of absence, which allegedly contributed to her severe mental distress. Although the specific nature of the harassment remains unclear, serious allegations regarding workplace toxicity have emerged against the Head of the Department (HOD). In response, the institute has temporarily removed the HOD from his position and reassigned him to the Anaesthesia Department under Dr. Vaishali.

Formation of Inquiry Committee

Given the gravity of the situation, a high-level committee has been established to conduct a confidential inquiry. This panel will report directly to the Union Health Ministry and will investigate claims related to workplace stress, departmental factionalism, administrative pressure, and the issuance of stern notices.

Details of the Suicide Attempt

Earlier reports from Medic Helpline indicated that the assistant professor attempted suicide by injecting herself with an anaesthetic drug at her home. This action caused a significant drop in her pulse and heartbeat. Although doctors managed to revive her after performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) multiple times, she remains in critical condition and is currently on ventilator support in the ICU.

Medical Condition and Consequences

AIIMS officials confirmed that the doctor self-administered a high dose of anaesthesia after returning home with a cannula inserted. This allowed the drug to directly enter her bloodstream. By the time she was transported back to the hospital by her husband, she had experienced cardiac arrest. Due to the duration of the cardiac arrest—nearly seven minutes—her brain was deprived of oxygen, leading to severe neurological damage. An MRI conducted 72 hours post-incident revealed significant brain cell injury, resulting in a condition known as ‘Global Hypoxia Brain.’

Issues Leading to Distress

Reports indicate that the assistant professor received a notice titled “Serious Misconduct” on the evening of September 10, 2025. In her written response, she expressed that the notice’s language was painful and mentally disturbing. She clarified that she had not intentionally violated any rules and detailed that the notice caused her immense stress. She also mentioned that she had taken academic leave to attend a conference and had informed the faculty group in advance.

Departmental Changes and Emergency Meeting

Following the controversy, the department issued another notice requiring faculty members, with the exception of two doctors, to secure prior appointments to meet the HOD. This new directive reportedly added to her mental distress.

In light of these developments, AIIMS management convened an emergency meeting with the Union Health Ministry. Decisions made during this meeting included the removal of the HOD, restructuring of departmental operations, and initiating a confidential investigation by the newly formed committee. This committee will also review previous complaints, including one lodged by another assistant professor against the HOD.
