Mandatory Posting of Postgraduate Doctors in Andhra Pradesh
Overview of Postings
Vijayawada: A total of 784 postgraduate (PG) doctors are set to be assigned as senior residents in secondary and teaching hospitals across Andhra Pradesh, commencing mandatory service on January 1, 2025. This service period will involve a split of six months in teaching hospitals and six months in secondary hospitals.
Distribution of Doctors
Out of the total 784 doctors, 393 will be placed in 102 regional, social, and district hospitals, while the remaining will serve in 17 teaching hospitals. The allocation of these postings will be conducted through an online counselling system, ensuring transparency with no human intervention.
Compensation and Regulations
The appointed senior residents will receive a monthly honorarium of Rs 80,500, as per Government Order No. 723 issued on December 4, 2024.
Specialties Involved
According to a report by TOI, these 784 PG doctors will cover 23 specialties, including:
– General Medicine (110)
– General Surgery (91)
– Gynaecology (87)
– Anaesthesiology (81)
– Paediatrics (58)
– Orthopaedics (53)
– Other departments such as Radiology, Ophthalmology, ENT, Dermatology, and non-clinical PG courses.
Minister’s Statement and Registration Details
On Wednesday, Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav informed PTI that doctors who gained admission under the state convener quota in government and private medical colleges during the 2022-23 academic year must complete a mandatory one-year service in various hospitals. Registration for these postings will remain open until December 29, and selected doctors must report for duty by January 5. The minister emphasized that senior resident services will consistently be provided in hospitals each year, irrespective of vacancies.
Consequences of Non-compliance
Dr. Raghunandan, Director of Medical Education (DME), cautioned that doctors who do not fulfill the mandatory service will incur a penalty of up to Rs 40 lakh, as stipulated in the bond signed during admission. Medic Helpline reported in 2024 that doctors admitted to PG medical courses in the Competent Authority Quota at Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences will be obliged to serve the State Government or face a penalty of Rs 40 lakh or Rs 50 lakh. For service candidates, a minimum service period of 10 years in any government institution or health facility in the state is required after completing in-service PG Degree/Super Specialty courses, with a bond penalty of Rs 50 lakh, in addition to the pay and allowances received during their studies.
