Andhra Pradesh Medical Council Cracks Down on Quackery

Statewide Initiative Against Unqualified Practitioners

The Andhra Pradesh Medical Council (APMC) has launched a comprehensive crackdown on quackery, emphasizing that strict measures will be taken against unqualified individuals who are illegally practicing modern medicine and jeopardizing public health. APMC Chairman Dr. Daggumati Srihari Rao has stated that the council is intensifying efforts to identify and eliminate fake practitioners who treat patients without recognized medical qualifications.

Risks to Public Health and Trust

Dr. Rao underscored that such illegal practices not only endanger lives but also undermine trust in the medical profession. He highlighted the importance of the anti-quackery committee and called for collaboration among district authorities, law enforcement, and medical professionals to identify and raid fraudulent practitioners.

Operational Measures and Penalties

Instructions have been issued to seal unauthorized clinics, serve notices, collect evidence, and ensure prompt reporting to both the council and law enforcement agencies. Dr. Rao cautioned that stringent penalties, including the cancellation of registrations, would be imposed on offenders. He also pointed out common tactics used by quacks, such as employing misleading titles and operating unauthorized labs.

Support for Registered Doctors

In addition to these enforcement measures, Dr. Rao announced plans to revive doctor registrations through mobile APMC units, which will facilitate renewals and services in remote areas.

Call for Public Involvement

According to a report from the Times of India, the APMC has urged registered doctors, medical associations, and the general public to promptly report instances of quackery. Dr. Rao reaffirmed his commitment to collaborate closely with all stakeholders, including branches of the Indian Medical Association and district medical officers, to effectively implement these initiatives, eliminate illegal medical practices, uphold high ethical standards, and protect public health throughout the state.

Common Practices of Quacks

Dr. Rao noted that many quacks operate clinics without proper registration, illegally prescribe modern medicines, or falsely present themselves as specialists without valid degrees.

Support for the Medical Community

He also announced ex-gratia payments to the families of deceased doctors, reflecting the council’s dual commitment to both safeguarding public health and supporting the medical community.
