Thoothukudi: Dr. Ponnaiya, a 90-year-old physician renowned for his unwavering dedication to providing affordable healthcare for the underprivileged near Tiruchendur, has passed away due to age-related health issues.
Legacy of Compassionate Care
A native of Arumuganeri, Dr. Ponnaiya operated a clinic in the town’s main bazaar for nearly 45 years. He was distinguished for his minimal consultation fees, ensuring that quality medical treatment was accessible to underprivileged patients. For many families in the area, his clinic was the primary and most trusted source of medical care.
Commitment to Community Service
Dr. Ponnaiya established his clinic in Arumuganeri while working in a government hospital. Throughout his career, he was transferred to various locations due to his government postings. However, he consistently returned to his hometown to provide care to his patients. After retiring from government service, he devoted the last three decades entirely to serving the community through his private practice.
Final Days and Public Tributes
Remarkably, Dr. Ponnaiya continued to see patients until just a week before his passing, charging only Rs 20 per consultation. Following the announcement of his death, a large number of residents from Arumuganeri gathered to pay their final respects. His body was placed at his clinic to allow the public to express their tributes. Subsequently, Dr. Ponnaiya’s body was transported by ambulance to his hometown of Tirunelveli for the final rites, as reported by ETV Bharat.
