In a remarkable act of compassion, a doctor from Bengaluru has successfully donated one of her kidneys to a stranger after obtaining approval from the Karnataka High Court. This case has garnered attention from both the medical community and the public, as it involves a living donor who chose to donate to someone she did not know, in compliance with existing transplant regulations.

Background of the Donation

Dr. Thankam S, employed at Manipal Hospital, registered as an organ donor back in 2014. Although organ pledges are typically intended for posthumous donation, she opted to pursue living kidney donation, expressing her desire to assist a patient in need without any familial or personal ties.

Legal Proceedings for Approval

According to a report by NewsFirst Prime, Dr. Thankam resolved in 2023 to donate her kidney to a 24-year-old patient whom she had never met. However, due to regulatory provisions governing unrelated organ donations, the transplant could not move forward immediately, as the recipient was not a relative. The hospital management initially withheld approval based on these legal requirements.

Determined to proceed, Dr. Thankam approached the Karnataka High Court in June 2025 for legal authorization to donate voluntarily. After reviewing the case, the High Court granted approval in December 2025 and instructed the relevant authorities to provide a list of five eligible recipients within five weeks, ensuring transparency and adherence to transplant guidelines.

Successful Transplant and Health Update

The first identified candidate was not medically compatible, but a suitable match was later found with a 54-year-old patient, who ultimately became the recipient. Official clearance for the transplant was granted on February 2, and the procedure was successfully conducted on February 10. Following the surgery, both the donor and the recipient are reported to be stable and in good health.

Personal Motivation Behind the Donation

Dr. Thankam expressed that donating a kidney had long been her aspiration. She emphasized her commitment to showcasing that compassion and voluntary organ donation can significantly impact lives.
