Title: The UK Needs to Amplify its AI Policy | Technology and Science

Content:
In their Policy Discussion, “Fostering Evidence-Based and Scientifically Driven AI Policy” (31 July, 10.1126/techscience.adu8449), R. Bommasani and team underscored the necessity of data-driven policy formulation for artificial intelligence (AI). Within the UK’s governing structure, the data science unit has evolved to be one of the dominant groups in the Prime Minister’s Office (1-4). Yet, recent modifications to the team indicate a diminishing focus on AI policy within the UK. To reinvigorate this dwindling agenda, the UK should explore rebuilding policy pathways in the Prime Minister’s Office and consider enacting laws that necessitate the role of the AI Security Institute (AISI) in shaping the nation’s new AI policy.
