Measuring 2 ml of Medicine with Two Containers

Available Containers

A pharmacist has access to a 4 ml container and a 5 ml container.

Steps to Measure 2 ml

To accurately measure 2 ml of medicine using just these two containers, follow these steps:

1. Fill the 5 ml container completely with the medicine.
2. Pour the contents of the 5 ml container into the 4 ml container until it is full. This action will leave 1 ml of medicine in the 5 ml container.
3. Empty the 4 ml container completely.
4. Transfer the remaining 1 ml of medicine from the 5 ml container into the empty 4 ml container.
5. Refill the 5 ml container with medicine again.
6. Carefully pour from the 5 ml container into the 4 ml container, which already contains 1 ml, until the 4 ml container is full. This will require only 3 ml from the 5 ml container.

After completing these steps, the pharmacist will have exactly 2 ml of medicine left in the 5 ml container, as needed.
