Surviving Cancer

Challenges Faced by Survivors

Surviving cancer often brings a sense of relief and hope; however, it can also introduce various psychosocial and physical challenges. A significant number of survivors, up to 96%, report experiencing cancer-related fatigue. Additionally, many face a decline in their overall quality of life, which can be associated with decreased physical function, anxiety, and depression.

The Shift in Recovery Focus

Traditionally, recovery from cancer emphasized the importance of rest. However, in the last decade, there has been a notable increase in research exploring the benefits of exercise for cancer survivors. A study by Speck et al. in 2010 revealed that engaging in moderate exercise 3-5 times a week can enhance physical fitness and strength in both upper and lower body. Furthermore, such exercise has been linked to positive effects on anxiety and significant reductions in pain, as well as improved immune responses, including enhanced natural killer cell activity and cytokine levels.

Exercise Recommendations

The American College of Sports Medicine advises undergoing exercise testing prior to beginning any workout program. This assessment ensures that individuals are exercising at an appropriate intensity to maximize the benefits. The general recommendation is to aim for 150 minutes of physical activity each week, supplemented by two to three sessions of strength training.
