Recent Violence at Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital
Incident Overview
New Delhi: Just ten days after a female doctor at Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital was assaulted by a patient’s attendant, another alarming incident of violence occurred at the same facility on Tuesday. This time, both doctors and security personnel faced attacks from patients’ attendants. In addition to the assaults, hospital property was damaged, leaving resident doctors feeling traumatized.
Social Media Response
Multiple short videos capturing the incident have circulated on social media. One clip shows an attendant attempting to assault a doctor while others try to intervene. Another video depicts a broken hospital door with shattered glass and damaged bed handles.
Background of Previous Assault
This recent event follows a prior assault at the hospital, where a female doctor in the casualty department was allegedly attacked by an attendant, reported to be a foreign national under the influence of drugs. According to Medic Helpline, the attendant pulled the doctor’s clothes, resulting in an injury to her forearm and leaving a bruise where her watch had been. Notably, security guards and the police officer on duty did not intervene during this incident.
Responses from Medical Associations
In light of the recent attack, several doctors’ associations have condemned the violence and called for strict action against those responsible, as well as improved security measures within hospital premises.
The Federation of All India Medical Associations (FAIMA) expressed their concerns in a post on ‘X’, stating, “Repeated assault within 10 days at DDU Hospital Casualty! Doctors and security personnel were attacked, hospital property vandalised, and resident doctors left traumatised. FAIMA strongly condemns this recurring violence and demands strict legal action.”
Dr. Mohammad Momin Khan, National Executive of FAIMA and Vice President of AIMSA (J&K), also took to ‘X’, urging authorities to respond decisively to the violence: “Another incident of violence at DDU Hospital, Delhi — doctors and security staff assaulted, hospital property vandalised by patient attendants last night. Urging authorities to take strict action.”
The Democratic Medical Association (DMA) also condemned the incident, emphasizing the need for immediate and firm action against the offenders, stating, “DMA stands in full solidarity with the doctors of DDU Hospital.”
