Understanding Alcohol Consumption During Pregnancy
Rumour: Small Amounts of Alcohol Are Safe
Many expectant mothers may believe that consuming a small amount of alcohol during pregnancy will not harm their child.
Truth: Alcohol Consumption Can Cause Serious Effects
This belief is misleading. Research indicates that any level of alcohol exposure during pregnancy can lead to fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS), developmental disorders, and physical disabilities. A recent study published in JAMA Pediatrics highlights that even minimal alcohol consumption can alter the craniofacial shape of a child.
Study Findings on Craniofacial Shape
The study examined the craniofacial shapes of children in relation to their exposure to alcohol in the womb. It revealed a consistent link between changes in craniofacial structure and alcohol exposure, irrespective of when or how much alcohol was consumed during pregnancy.
