Delhi Government Approves Creation of 4,002 New Posts in Hospitals

The Delhi government has sanctioned the establishment of 4,002 new positions across four government hospitals. This decision aims to optimize the utilization of recently added hospital beds and alleviate the strain on overcrowded public health facilities, as announced by officials on Thursday.
Background and Justification
The proposal received approval from Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena, following recommendations from the government. This initiative comes in the wake of the addition of 1,515 beds in hospitals throughout the capital. Despite enhancements in infrastructure, officials noted that these hospitals have struggled to operate at full capacity due to inadequate staffing levels.
Details of the New Positions
The newly created positions encompass a variety of roles, including doctors, surgeons, senior residents, specialists, nurses, nursing attendants, technicians, paramedical staff, administrative officers, clerical workers, and security personnel. Out of the total positions, 3,031 will be filled through permanent recruitment, while 971 will be outsourced, as reported by news agency PTI.
Distribution of Positions Across Hospitals
The largest allocation of 1,737 posts is designated for the Sant Durbal Nath Ji Trauma Centre, which inaugurated a 362-bed trauma block in September 2025. Ambedkar Nagar Hospital will receive 666 additional staff to support the addition of 400 new beds, while Guru Gobind Singh Hospital will be allotted 1,491 posts for 472 new beds. Additionally, the Shri Dada Dev Maitri Avum Shishu Chikitsalaya will see the creation of 520 posts in anticipation of a 281-bed expansion.
Locations of Staffing Increases
The staffing enhancements will occur at several key hospitals, including Guru Gobind Singh Hospital in Raghubir Nagar, Ambedkar Nagar Hospital in Dakshinpuri, Sant Durbal Nath Ji Trauma Centre at Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital in Mangolpuri, and Shri Dada Dev Maitri Avum Shishu Chikitsalaya in Dwarka.
Criticism of Previous Administration
In a statement, officials from the LG secretariat criticized the previous AAP administration for failing to coordinate manpower planning with infrastructure development. They indicated that the hospitals remained underutilized for years due to a lack of sanctioned staff despite the expanded bed capacity.
Concerns About Hospital Projects
Officials also raised concerns regarding 24 hospitals initiated during the AAP government, citing issues such as delays, cost overruns, and corruption, with ongoing investigations.
Expected Impact of New Appointments
The new staffing appointments are anticipated to reduce the workload on existing doctors, enhance patient care, and redirect cases from overburdened central hospitals such as GTB, Lok Nayak, and GB Pant, according to reports from PTI.
Financial Implications
The implementation of this staffing initiative will incur approximately Rs 408 crore in expenditures, for which budgetary provisions have already been established.
