AIIMS Renames DM Endocrinology Course
New Nomenclature Approved
New Delhi: The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) has officially announced a change in the nomenclature of its superspeciality course in metabolic disorders. The highest medical qualification in this field will now be referred to as DM Endocrinology, Metabolism and Diabetes. This change was confirmed in an office memorandum issued on November 13.
Background of the Change
Registrar Prof. Girija Prasad Rath highlighted that the renaming was approved by the competent authority following the recommendations from the 124th Standing Academic Committee meeting, which took place on July 15, 2024. This decision was subsequently ratified by the Governing Body during its 163rd meeting on September 12, 2025.
Purpose of the New Title
The updated course title aims to more accurately reflect the evolving academic and clinical scope of the specialty. It now includes the comprehensive management of endocrine disorders, metabolic diseases, and diabetes. All relevant departments have been instructed to implement this revised nomenclature across academic, administrative, and digital platforms.
Alignment with Global Standards
This change is anticipated to align the Indian superspeciality programme more closely with international endocrinology curricula, where metabolism and diabetes are recognized as essential elements of advanced endocrine education. It is expected that this initiative will be emulated by other medical colleges nationwide, in accordance with National Medical Commission (NMC) guidelines.
