Doctor Couple Arrested for Filing Fake Robbery Complaint in Thanjavur

Overview of the Incident

In a recent case in Trichy, the Thanjavur Town South police have apprehended a doctor couple for allegedly misleading authorities by reporting a fictitious robbery. The couple claimed that 60 sovereigns of gold and 4 kg of silver were stolen from their home, while the valuables were actually secured at their residence.

Details of the Complaint

On January 8, the couple reported to the Thanjavur Town South police station that their house had been burgled on January 7 during their absence. They provided a list of missing items, which included a 12-sovereign necklace, an 11-sovereign thali chain, 12-sovereign bangles, a 10-sovereign periya chain, 5-sovereign rings, 7-sovereign earrings, 3-sovereign maattal, and approximately 4 kg of silver puja items. According to their account, burglars had broken open the front door to steal these valuables.

Police Investigation

Following the complaint, the police initiated an investigation and registered a case. They reviewed CCTV footage, which led a team, headed by Inspector C Sudha and Sub-Inspector P Thennarasu, to identify a suspect named G Karthik Pandian, 41, from Vilangudi in Madurai. Upon questioning, Pandian admitted to stealing only minor items, including kitchen vessels weighing about 1 kg, three bags, and two shirts, denying any theft of gold or significant amounts of silver.

Conclusion and Arrest

Further inquiries conducted by Town DSP R Somasundaram and Inspector Sudha uncovered that the couple’s jewelry was safely stored at their home in Orathanadu. The Inspector stated, “The couple deliberately exaggerated the loss and concealed the truth despite knowing the facts.” As a result of their actions, the couple was arrested under Sections 212(a), 212(b), and 229(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), for wasting police time and resources.
