Hyderabad: Controversy Surrounds KNRUHS Vice-Chancellor Resignation

Government Plans to Appoint IAS Officer

In the wake of the resignation of the Vice-Chancellor of Kaloji Narayana Rao University of Health Sciences (KNRUHS), the Telangana government is considering appointing an IAS officer to the position. This decision follows reports of significant irregularities and discrepancies in the evaluation process of postgraduate (MD/MS) theory exams.

Opposition from Medical Community

The proposed appointment has faced strong opposition from doctors in Telangana. They argue that the Vice-Chancellor role should be filled by a qualified senior doctor, emphasizing that health universities in India have historically been led by medical professionals. The Telangana Government Doctors Association (TGGDA) has raised serious concerns regarding this shift in leadership criteria.

Concerns Over Medical Education Standards

The TGGDA highlighted that health universities have always been directed by esteemed medical experts. They warned that deviating from this tradition could adversely impact the quality of medical education, academic standards, and the autonomy of health institutions.

Call for Qualified Leadership

In a press release, the TGGDA expressed disappointment that the state is overlooking capable and academically distinguished doctors. They pointed out that Telangana boasts numerous senior doctors with integrity, teaching excellence, and administrative experience who could lead KNRUHS effectively and transparently. The association urged the state government to ensure that the Vice-Chancellor position is awarded to a qualified medical professional to preserve the credibility of health universities and the future of medical education in Telangana.

Student Concerns and Examination Issues

Reports have surfaced regarding dissatisfaction among final-year MD and MS students from both government and private medical colleges affiliated with KNRUHS. Many students raised alarms about the evaluation process after several failed by narrow margins. The situation escalated following the resignation of Dr. PV Nanda Kumar Reddy, the Vice-Chancellor.

Allegations of Evaluation Irregularities

Students have reported significant discrepancies and irregularities in the evaluation of the postgraduate (MD/MS) theory examinations conducted between October 7 and October 15. Similar allegations have been made concerning the practical exams held from October 25 to October 30. The results for these examinations were announced on November 4.
