Rohtak: Dr. Sanjay Tiwari, the principal of Pandit Bhagwat Dayal Sharma Postgraduate Institute of Dental Sciences (PGIDS) in Rohtak, has been appointed as the chairperson of the National Dental Commission (NDC). This regulatory body was established by the National Dental Commission Act, 2023, to succeed the Dental Council of India (DCI). The NDC is tasked with overseeing dental education and maintaining professional standards for dentists across India.

The appointment was made based on the recommendation of the appointments committee of the central cabinet, in accordance with the National Dental Commission Act, 2023. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare issued the official appointment letter on February 4, and Dr. Tiwari will assume his new role shortly.

Professional Background

Dr. Tiwari brings 34 years of experience in dentistry to his new position. He holds a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) and a Master of Dental Surgery (MDS) in Operative Dentistry from King George Medical University. His previous roles include serving as a Senior Professor and Head of Conservative Dentistry at PGIDS, as well as Dean of the Faculty of Dental Sciences at Pt. Bhagwat Dayal Sharma University of Health Sciences (UHSR) in Rohtak.

Areas of Expertise

His professional interests encompass Regenerative Endodontics in tooth tissue engineering, Endodontic Microsurgery, and Aesthetic Dentistry. Dr. Tiwari has received several accolades, including the Dr. C.S. Shaw & Manjula Shaw award for Best Scientific Paper in Operative Dentistry at the 53rd Indian Dental Conference, and the Best Paper Award at the 2nd Convention of the Indian Endodontic Society in New Delhi.

Research Contributions

Dr. Tiwari has authored over 80 research papers published in both national and international journals. He is also recognized as a Commonwealth fellow with King’s College London and received a Fellowship in Micro Restorative and Endodontic from the Indian Board of Micro Restorative & Endodontics on November 16, 2018. Recently, he was honored by the National Medicos Organization (NMO) Haryana.
