New Guidelines for Managing Chronic Constipation

Expert Recommendations from the British Dietetic Association

The British Dietetic Association (BDA) has released updated guidelines aimed at addressing chronic constipation, a condition that impacts around 20% of adults in the United States. This revised set of guidelines includes 59 recommendations focusing on various foods and supplements that are believed to help alleviate this common issue.

Effective Foods for Relief

The BDA guidelines highlight specific foods known for their effectiveness in managing chronic constipation. Notably, kiwifruit and rye bread are emphasized as beneficial dietary options. Incorporating these foods into one’s diet can significantly improve an individual’s quality of life, especially given the discomfort associated with this condition.

Research Insights from King’s College London

A study by researchers at King’s College London sought to identify the most effective foods, beverages, and supplements for relieving chronic constipation. Their thorough review of 75 clinical trials indicated that kiwifruit, rye bread, and mineral-rich water are particularly advantageous for individuals looking for relief.

Limited Benefits of Other Supplements

Although the study explored various potential remedies, it found that probiotics and senna supplements provide limited benefits compared to dietary changes. These findings, published in the Journal of Human Nutrition & Dietetics and Neurogastroenterology & Motility, enhance the understanding of effective treatments for chronic constipation.
