Kolkata: Former Deputy Superintendent Suspended Amid Corruption Allegations
Suspension Details
The former deputy superintendent of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital has been suspended following corruption allegations against him. The State Health Department issued the suspension order on Friday, indicating that his name emerged during a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry mandated by the Calcutta High Court.
Corruption Allegations
According to the suspension order, the former deputy superintendent, while serving at RG Kar Medical College, allegedly accepted undue benefits, including air tickets from two private firms and a total of Rs 2.89 lakh from two other companies in exchange for awarding them work contracts at the hospital. After his time at RG Kar, he was transferred to Murshidabad Medical College and subsequently to Kaliaganj Sub-divisional Hospital. Although he submitted his resignation approximately a year ago, it was not accepted pending an investigation into his activities, as reported by TOI.
Background of the Investigation
In October 2025, Medic Helpline reported that the former deputy superintendent, a key whistleblower in the financial irregularities case at RG Kar Medical College, tendered his resignation. His petition led to the Calcutta High Court directing a CBI investigation into the multi-crore financial irregularities at the medical institute. The CBI subsequently arrested Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar, along with three others, all of whom are currently in judicial custody.
Further Developments
In 2024, the Anti-Corruption Branch of the CBI arrested Sandip Ghosh and three others in connection with alleged corruption and financial misconduct at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The investigation into Ghosh followed the Calcutta High Court’s directive for a thorough probe into the financial irregularities at the institution.
