Bhubaneswar: Launch of Special Edition on Antimicrobial Resistance by GAIMS

Introduction to GAIMS-AXIS Initiative

The Global Association of Indian Medical Students (GAIMS) has unveiled a Special Edition focused on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) as part of its GAIMS-AXIS initiative. This launch underscores GAIMS’ dedication to promoting academic excellence and fostering community-driven medical scholarship.

Understanding Antimicrobial Resistance

Antimicrobial resistance occurs when microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites adapt to resist medications intended to eliminate them. This evolution complicates the treatment of infections, leading to increased illness, mortality, and healthcare expenses.

Editorial Leadership

The Special Edition is spearheaded by Dr. Dattareya Mukherjee, Dr. Prakhar Bajpai, and Dr. Abhishek Kashyap. Their combined academic, clinical, and organizational expertise positions them well to tackle this critical global health issue.

Foundational Vision of GAIMS

GAIMS was founded under the vision of Dr. Shubham Anand, Chairman of GAIMS, with the aim of enhancing academic excellence, promoting student-led research, and initiating community-oriented programs among Indian medical students on a global scale.

Formal Launch of the Special Edition

The Special Edition on Antimicrobial Resistance was officially launched by Dr. Priya Abraham, the former Director of the ICMR–National Institute of Virology. Dr. Abraham is a renowned virologist recognized for her pivotal role in isolating India’s first live COVID-19 virus, a key contribution to the development of India’s indigenous COVID-19 vaccine, COVAXIN.

Notable Guests at the Launch

The launch event featured Dr. Amit Chakrabarty, President of the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI), along with Vivek Agnihotri, a National Award-winning film director known for his works including The Vaccine War and The Kashmir Files. Actress Pallavi Joshi, who depicted Dr. Priya Abraham in The Vaccine War, also attended. Their participation highlighted the connection between science, public health, and community engagement.

Addressing a Global Health Challenge

Antimicrobial Resistance is recognized as one of the most urgent public health challenges globally. Through this Special Edition, GAIMS seeks to ignite academic discussions, encourage evidence-based research, and empower medical students to contribute actively to solutions for the escalating threat of drug-resistant infections.

Conclusion: A Milestone for GAIMS

The launch of this Special Edition represents a significant milestone in GAIMS’ commitment to enhancing medical education, advancing global health advocacy, and fostering leadership development among future healthcare professionals.
