Incident Overview

In a somber event, Dr. Trinath Pal, a 55-year-old gynaecologist at Nilgiri Sub-Divisional Government Hospital in Balasore, died from a heart attack while on duty. Colleagues and classmates revealed that Dr. Pal had previously undergone bypass surgery and was managing diabetes and other heart-related issues. They emphasized that, despite being healthcare professionals, doctors are not immune to heart attacks due to the high levels of stress and burnout associated with their work.

Details of the Incident

According to a report from the Times of India, the incident occurred on Sunday at approximately 8 am while Dr. Pal was attending to patients in the outpatient department (OPD). He reported feeling uneasy and experienced chest pain during a consultation. After visiting the washroom, he failed to return, prompting staff to check on him. Upon exiting the washroom, Dr. Pal collapsed on a bed inside the OPD. Emergency responders transported him to the District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) in Balasore, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Following Dr. Pal’s passing, Balasore MP Pratap Chandra Sarangi visited the hospital to express condolences to the grieving family, describing the loss as irreplaceable for the medical community.

Medical Insights on Heart Health

Dr. Amulya Kumar Das, the additional District Medical Officer at DHH, confirmed that Dr. Pal suffered a massive heart attack and had been under treatment for diabetes and cardiac issues. Dr. Rama Chandra Barik, a professor and head of the cardiology department at AIIMS Bhubaneswar, highlighted that various factors contribute to heart problems, including age, genetics, lifestyle, and stress. He noted that even with an understanding of preventive measures, healthcare professionals can overlook their own health while caring for patients.

Challenges Faced by Healthcare Professionals

Dr. Rama Raman Sarangi, a cardiologist, pointed out that by the time doctors attempt to address their health, they may have already developed several risk factors. He noted that managing stress and burnout is particularly challenging in the healthcare field. Additionally, some doctors may resort to unhealthy habits, such as alcohol consumption and smoking, which can further compromise their heart health.
