Allegations of Medical Negligence in Alappuzha Dialysis Deaths
Incident Overview
Alappuzha: Following the tragic deaths of two patients who underwent dialysis at the Haripad taluk hospital, the Kerala Health Department has responded by closing the dialysis unit and initiating an inquiry. The deceased individuals have been identified as Majeed, aged 53, from Puthukkad, Kayamkulam, and Ramachandran, 60, from Haripad, according to news agency PTI.
Details of the Incident
Health Department officials reported that both patients experienced severe symptoms, including shivering and vomiting, during their dialysis sessions on December 29. Ramachandran was admitted to a private hospital but unfortunately passed away on December 30. Majeed was subsequently transferred to Alappuzha Medical College Hospital, where he died on December 31.
Contamination Allegations and Inspection Findings
A report from Mathrubhumi suggested that contamination in the dialysis water may have contributed to the patients’ adverse reactions. However, an expert team, led by the District Medical Officer (DMO), conducted an inspection and concluded that these allegations were unfounded, asserting that there was no negligence on the part of the hospital.
Immediate Actions Taken
In light of the allegations, authorities ordered the dialysis unit’s closure for 15 days. The 58 patients who were receiving treatment at the facility have been transferred to other government hospitals, and the staff have been temporarily reassigned to assist in those locations. Meanwhile, the condition of two other patients exhibiting similar symptoms is currently stable.
Inquiry and Responses
The Alappuzha District Collector’s office has mandated an inquiry into the matter. Health officials confirmed that operations at the dialysis center have been suspended. Relatives of the deceased have accused the hospital of medical negligence, asserting that both patients developed infections during their treatment. Additionally, Congress MP K C Venugopal has reached out to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Health Minister Veena George, urging a comprehensive investigation into the incident.
