Controversy Resolved at Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital

Resolution of Dispute

A recent conflict between a patient and a doctor at Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital (IGMC) in Shimla has been amicably resolved. Both parties have extended apologies, addressing their grievances and concluding the matter positively. “Both sides made a mistake, but now a settlement has been reached, all grievances have been resolved, and everything is fine. We both hugged each other, said sorry, and have put the matter behind us,” a senior resident stated to reporters, as reported by news agency PTI.

Patient’s Perspective

The patient involved, Arjun Singh, confirmed that the issue has now been settled. “The doctor has apologised, and the grievances of both sides have been resolved. What happened at that time and how it happened, there is nothing more to say about it as the matter is closed,” he said.

Government Involvement

The reconciliation took place in the presence of Naresh Chauhan, Principal Media Advisor to Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu. Chauhan emphasized the government’s commitment to preventing troubles for individuals involved. In response to public concerns, the Chief Minister previously met with the doctors and promised an investigation into the incident.

Withdrawal of FIR

Following the agreement between the patient and the doctor, the FIR against the senior resident doctor will also be retracted, according to Chauhan. Families of both parties expressed relief and satisfaction regarding the resolution. “Regardless of whose fault it was, a compromise has been reached now. It is necessary to learn a lesson from this so that such an incident does not repeat in the future,” they remarked.

Background of the Incident

The altercation occurred on December 22, when Singh claimed the dispute began over his objection to being addressed as “tu” instead of “tum” by the doctor, which allegedly provoked anger. Conversely, the doctor asserted that Singh instigated the confrontation by using abusive language towards him and his family. A video of the incident captured the doctor striking the patient, while Singh attempted to retaliate.

Inquiry and Strike

An inquiry committee established by the state government found fault with both parties. As a result, the doctor faced termination for “misconduct, misbehaviour, and acts of unbecoming a public servant.” Following this decision, resident doctors at IGMC initiated a strike demanding the revocation of the termination order. They subsequently called off the strike after two days, following Chief Minister Sukhu’s appeal and assurance of a re-investigation. On Monday evening, the Chief Minister instructed health officials to form a new committee to reassess the incident.
