IKDRC-ITS Achieves Milestone in Kidney Transplants
Historic Achievement
The Institute of Kidney Diseases and Research Centre (IKDRC-ITS) at Ahmedabad Civil Medical College has reached a significant milestone by completing 500 kidney transplants in a single year. This remarkable achievement in 2025 positions IKDRC-ITS as the only public sector hospital in India to perform 500 kidney transplants within a year, solidifying its reputation as the leading government-run kidney transplant center in the country.
Support and Recognition
Operating under the auspices of the Gujarat government’s Health Department, the institute has become a beacon of hope for economically disadvantaged patients while embracing advanced medical technology. This milestone has also earned IKDRC the top rank among public hospitals in India for kidney transplantation.
Transplant Statistics
According to official data, the institute had completed approximately 400 transplants by November 2024. By October 7, 2025, this figure reached 400, ultimately climbing to 500 by year-end, marking an unprecedented achievement in public healthcare. Among the 500 transplant recipients, 367 were men, while 133 were women.
Geographical Reach
IKDRC’s services extended beyond Gujarat, benefiting 330 patients from the state as well as 170 from other regions of the country. The institute has also achieved notable success in specialized and technology-driven transplants.
Diverse Transplant Procedures
The 2025 transplant tally comprises 157 cadaver transplants, 90 swap transplants, 49 pediatric transplants, and 43 robotic kidney transplants. These complex procedures were executed using modern techniques and the expertise of highly skilled medical teams.
Affordable Healthcare Initiatives
IKDRC plays a pivotal role in providing affordable healthcare to vulnerable populations. Of the total transplants, 318 were performed under the PM-JAY (Ayushman Bharat) scheme. Additional procedures included 29 under the School Health Programme, 24 for SC beneficiaries, 7 for ST beneficiaries, 4 for CAPF personnel, and 5 for CGHS beneficiaries, ensuring equitable access to life-saving treatments.
24/7 Service Model
A crucial element of IKDRC’s success is its round-the-clock service model. The institute remains operational 24/7 throughout the year, including during major festivals such as Diwali.
Leadership and Future Outlook
With ongoing support and guidance from Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and the Gujarat government’s Health Department, the Institute of Kidney Diseases and Research Centre has established itself as one of India’s premier public hospitals, exemplifying excellence in healthcare and humanitarian service.
