First Indian Surgeon Elected to RCPSG Governing Council

Hyderabad: In a significant achievement, Dr. Raghu Ram, Founding Director of the KIMS-USHALAKSHMI Centre for Breast Diseases, has made history by becoming the first and only surgeon from India elected to the apex Governing Council of the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Glasgow (RCPSG).

The RCPSG, established 425 years ago, stands as one of the oldest institutions in the world and is the only multidisciplinary Royal College in the United Kingdom and Ireland. It encompasses a diverse range of medical professionals, including surgeons, physicians, dentists, podiatrists, and travel medicine specialists, representing 97 countries globally.

Election Announcement and Historical Context

The results of the election for the Executive Board and Governing Council were revealed by Prof. Hany Eteiba, President of the RCPSG, during the Annual General Body Meeting held at the College in Glasgow on December 5, 2025. This year, a record 26 surgeons from around the world competed for the sole position dedicated to a surgeon practicing outside the UK, marking a historic moment in the 500-plus-year legacy of all UK Royal Colleges.

Dr. Raghu Ram’s Role and Contributions

As a member of the Governing Council for the term 2025–2028, Dr. P. Raghu Ram will uniquely represent the RCPSG for all countries outside the UK. Since 2000, he has been instrumental in organizing 12 overseas FRCS/MRCS preparatory courses in Hyderabad, empowering over 2,000 trainees from South Asia to achieve their goals in these prestigious examinations. His commitment and strategic leadership have significantly enhanced the College’s academic presence in India.

Acknowledgments and Honors

Dr. Raghu Ram is an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE), a recipient of the Padma Shri, and the Dr. B.C. Roy National Award. He was also recently awarded the Honorary FRCS (Glasgow), the highest honor conferred by the College. Dr. Raghu Ram holds the unique distinction of being both an FRCS by examination and an Honorary Fellow of the same College, a rare honor achieved by very few worldwide.
