Integration of Clinical Research in Medical Education
National Medical Commission’s Decision
New Delhi: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has made a significant decision to incorporate clinical research as a fundamental aspect of medical education. This move transitions clinical research from an optional subject to a central element of the clinical curriculum, which will include assessments and training.
Formation of a Joint Committee
NMC Chairperson and NBEMS President Dr. Abhijat Sheth announced that this decision has received in-principle approval from the NMC Board. To facilitate this integration, a joint committee will be established, comprising representatives from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), and medical experts. The committee’s objective will be to develop a comprehensive framework for the extensive incorporation of clinical research into both undergraduate and postgraduate medical education.
Enhancing Medical Education Quality
The initiative aims to elevate the standard of medical education and cultivate a stronger culture of clinical research within the medical community. In a statement to ANI, Dr. Abhijat Sheth emphasized the importance of clinical research, stating, “Clinical research is an important subject, and we realize that it should be integrated into the mainstream part of clinical medicine rather than optional or side subjects.”
Curriculum Assessment and Training
Dr. Sheth further elaborated, “The National Medical Commission has decided that clinical research will be an integral part of clinical medicine, where not only the curriculum but also curriculum assessment and training will be included in the medical curriculum.”
Future Prospects
He expressed satisfaction with the recent approval from the NMC Board and mentioned the plan to collaborate with ICMR, IISc, IITs, and other medical experts to draft a proposal for large-scale clinical research integration in medical education. This integration is expected to encompass both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, with ICMR expressing readiness to initiate new PhD courses in clinical research.
Dr. Sheth noted that several IITs and IISc have already made significant advancements in innovations and discoveries. He concluded, “This will be a big advantage in terms of enhancing the quality of medical education and fostering a culture of clinical research within the medical fraternity, which is the need of the hour.”
