Kannur Doctor Faces Allegations of Medical Negligence

Incident Overview

A doctor affiliated with a private hospital in Kannur has been charged following accusations of medical negligence that reportedly resulted in significant vision loss for newborn twin infants. The twins were born at the hospital on August 3, and their parents claim that the babies did not receive appropriate medical care immediately after birth, leading to serious damage to their eyesight.

Discovery of Negligence

According to a report by The Hindu, the situation was brought to light when another physician from the same hospital alerted the parents about potential negligence in the twins’ treatment. Subsequently, the infants were taken to an eye hospital in Kannur, where they were eventually referred to a specialized eye care center in Coimbatore for advanced treatment.

Medical Findings

At the specialized center, medical professionals determined that one of the twins had experienced severe vision loss in both eyes. Although surgery was conducted, the child’s eyesight could not be fully restored.

Legal Action Taken

In response to the parents’ complaint, the Kannur police have filed a case against the doctor, citing applicable sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) regarding medical negligence. An investigation is currently ongoing to ascertain the precise cause of the infants’ visual impairment.

Related Case of Medical Negligence

In a separate incident, Medic Helpline reported that a group of 15 doctors, including senior health officials at Eras Lucknow Medical College and Hospital, have been implicated in a medical negligence case. This follows allegations from a 57-year-old woman who asserted that a surgical instrument was inadvertently left inside her abdomen during a procedure approximately two and a half years ago. Since 2023, she has experienced severe abdominal pain.

Additionally, the woman claimed that upon discovering the retained instrument, the doctors attempted to mislead her by falsely diagnosing her with appendicitis to conceal their earlier negligence. She further stated that she incurred expenses of around Rs 5 lakh on treatment from 2023 to 2025, yet her condition has not improved.
