Detention of Medical Student in Delhi Blast Investigation

Background of the Incident

A first-year Doctor of Medicine (Cardiology) student from Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi Memorial (GSVM) Medical College in Kanpur has been detained by the Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) as part of the investigation into the recent Delhi Red Fort blast case.

Media Misrepresentation

A significant controversy arose when various media outlets mistakenly identified another doctor with the same name from Kerala as the accused individual. According to a report by the PTI news agency, the detained student is a postgraduate student in the Cardiology program, whereas the doctor whose photo was misused is a consultant interventional cardiologist based in Calicut, Kerala.

The Kerala doctor issued a strong statement clarifying that he has no connection to the incident, describing the media coverage that used his image as “false,” “misleading,” and “defamatory.” He expressed that this error has caused him considerable mental distress and damage to his reputation.

Details of the Detention

The 32-year-old accused medical student was apprehended at an undisclosed location, according to a senior official cited by PTI. ATS agents conducted a search of his rented accommodation in Ashok Nagar, Nazirabad, where they confiscated his mobile phone and laptop for forensic analysis and transported him to Delhi for further questioning. The official indicated that the student is expected to be confronted with individuals already arrested in connection with the case.

Connections to the Investigation

Reports from Medic Helpline reveal that the student, originally from Anantnag in Jammu and Kashmir, came under scrutiny by the ATS after revelations made during the interrogation of a former GSVM professor who had previously been arrested in the same investigation. Investigators suspect that the student maintained regular contact with this professor and her brother, both of whom are being extensively questioned.

Sources indicate that on the day of the explosion near the Red Fort, the student was in telephone communication with individuals allegedly associated with the professor’s network. His recent visit to Jammu and Kashmir has further fueled suspicions. When ATS officials arrived at his residence, he reportedly attempted to erase data from his phone, but they managed to seize the device in time.
