KGMOA Plans Statewide Agitation Over Doctor’s Suspension

Background of the Incident

Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala Government Medical Officers’ Association (KGMOA) has announced plans for a statewide agitation following the suspension of a doctor from the gynaecology department at the Nedumangad district hospital. This action is linked to the tragic death of a newborn after a C-section delivery.

Details of the Protest

On Sunday, the KGMOA stated that it would escalate its protest measures to include an outpatient (OP) boycott across the district. The association criticized the state government for its inaction regarding key demands related to the incident at the hospital, as reported by PTI. KGMOA serves as the sole representative organization for all categories of doctors within the state’s health services.

Key Demands and Actions

In a statement released following a recent district general body meeting, KGMOA demanded the immediate reinstatement of the suspended doctor. They also called for the arrest of individuals accused of assaulting the hospital superintendent and the establishment of a permanent police aid post at the facility. The association has expressed concerns over the government’s failure to ensure the safety and dignity of healthcare workers.

Continuation of Protests

KGMOA has declared that the OP boycott at the Nedumangad District Hospital will continue on Monday and will extend to the entire Thiruvananthapuram district on February 24. Additionally, the association plans to maintain its ongoing non-cooperation agitation in the district, warning that the situation may escalate to a state-level protest if the government does not address its demands promptly. Furthermore, the general body has resolved to boycott all duties related to the upcoming Attukal Pongala festival as part of their protest.

Government’s Response

According to a government order, the disciplinary action against the doctor was implemented due to allegations of medical negligence associated with the newborn’s death, as well as bribery charges reported through media outlets. The doctor was suspended immediately, pending a detailed inquiry and further disciplinary proceedings, as stated in the order.
