KGMCTA Announces Indefinite Boycott of Teaching
Details of the Protest
Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala Government Medical College Teachers’ Association (KGMCTA) has declared an indefinite boycott of teaching starting January 13. This action is a response to the government’s failure to address their longstanding demands. Additionally, all non-emergency medical services will also be suspended from January 13. A dharna is scheduled to take place outside the Secretariat on January 19, 2026.
Exemptions from the Boycott
KGMCTA emphasized that essential health services will remain operational during the protest. This includes services such as Casualty, Labour Room, Intensive Care Unit (ICU), in-patient care, emergency treatments, surgeries, and post-mortem examinations.
Background of the Protests
The KGMCTA has been protesting since July 1, 2025, citing the government’s failure to fulfill promises concerning various long-standing demands. These demands include the rectification of anomalies in the pay revision order, payment of salary and Dearness Allowance (DA) arrears, prevention of temporary and mass transfers, and the establishment of adequate faculty positions and facilities for both faculty and patients.
Escalation of Agitation
According to a report from ANI, the lack of remedial actions from government authorities has led to an escalation in protests, including relay outpatient department (OPD) boycotts. A meeting was held on November 10, 2025, with the Minister for Health and Family Welfare, during which promises were made to address the Association’s legitimate demands. However, KGMCTA contends that no issues have been satisfactorily resolved.
Future Plans and Public Communication
In light of the government’s inaction, KGMCTA feels compelled to intensify their protests. They will continue their work-to-rule agitation and non-cooperation measures. To inform the public about the challenges faced by government sector doctors and to outline the details of the protest programs, a press conference is scheduled for January 12 at the Thiruvananthapuram Press Club, as reported by ANI.
