Lucknow Resident Doctor Involved in Serious Allegations
Arrest and Initial Charges
A resident doctor from King George’s Medical University (KGMU) in Lucknow has recently been barred from continuing his medical studies and was arrested due to serious allegations. Initially, he faced charges of sexually exploiting a female doctor under the guise of marriage and attempting to forcibly convert her religion for this purpose.
Connections to Delhi Car Blast
During the ongoing investigation, new allegations have surfaced regarding the doctor’s links to an accused involved in the Delhi car blast near the Red Fort, which resulted in multiple fatalities and injuries. The police have indicated that the doctor had connections with the banned Islamic organization, the Popular Front of India (PFI).
Investigation Insights
Sources from the Deccan Chronicle revealed that the doctor had maintained contact with the accused following their initial meeting at seminars and conferences. They reportedly communicated regularly over the phone. One of the suspects is believed to be part of a “white-collar” terror module.
Details of the Arrest
A joint team from the Surveillance Unit of West Lucknow and Police Station Chowk apprehended the doctor, who was a wanted individual with a reward of Rs 50,000 for his capture. He faces severe accusations, including repeated sexual assault and coercing the victim into religious conversion.
Legal Aid and Ideological Affiliations
While evading arrest, the accused allegedly sought legal assistance from the PFI and expressed admiration for fugitive Islamic preacher Zakir Naik. He also confessed to his involvement with the accused in the terror-related case. Investigating authorities are now exploring whether the accused’s network extends to other regions of the state and identifying any additional participants in the alleged operations.
Impact on Victim
The female doctor involved in this case, a Hindu, has alleged that her male colleague, a Muslim, emotionally manipulated her and pressured her to convert to Islam for marriage. After refusing his advances, she reported continued harassment, which led to severe mental distress and a suicide attempt. On December 27, she attempted to take her life by consuming a large quantity of medication in her KGMU hostel room. She was promptly taken to the Trauma Centre and later transferred to the Critical Care Management ICU for intensive treatment.
Marriage and Religious Conversion
Reports indicate that the accused married a fellow student in February after she allegedly converted her religion. Both individuals were students at Agra Medical College when they decided to marry.
KGMU’s Response and Investigation Transition
Fact-Finding Committee Findings
KGMU established a fact-finding committee to investigate the allegations of forced religious conversion and sexual harassment. The committee found the doctor guilty of the charges, leading to his expulsion from the university.
Transfer of Case to STF
In response to the findings, KGMU administration transferred the case to the Special Task Force (STF) of the Uttar Pradesh Police. This decision was confirmed on Monday evening following a meeting between Vice-Chancellor Dr. Soniya Nityanand and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. Dr. Nityanand updated the Chief Minister about the Vishakha Committee report, which concluded that the accused was guilty and could not continue his studies at KGMU. The STF has commenced its investigation, and the internal inquiry committee established by the university has been disbanded.
Encouraging Reporting of Similar Allegations
In light of the ongoing controversy surrounding religious conversion, KGMU has urged its staff to report any similar allegations that may arise.
