Uttar Pradesh Women’s Commission Investigates Complaint from KGMU Resident Doctor

Allegations of Harassment and Suicide Attempt

Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh State Women’s Commission has initiated an inquiry into a complaint made by a resident doctor at King George’s Medical University (KGMU). The doctor reportedly attempted suicide and has accused a senior colleague of harassment, including pressuring her to convert her religion for marriage.

According to Medic Helpline, the doctor alleged that her suicide attempt was a result of continuous harassment from her colleague, who insisted she convert to Islam. The complainant, identifying as a Hindu, stated that her male colleague, who is from the Muslim community, emotionally manipulated her and pressured her to change her religion.

Details of the Complaint

The complaint reveals that after the doctor refused to convert, she faced ongoing harassment, which significantly impacted her mental health and ultimately led to her suicide attempt. In response, her father lodged complaints on both the Chief Minister’s public grievance portal and with the Uttar Pradesh State Women’s Commission, asserting that his daughter’s distress was due to relentless pressure from her colleague.

Response from the Women’s Commission

Aparna Yadav, Vice President of the Women’s Commission, held a press conference alongside the complainant. She assured that the Commission would take stringent action against the accused following a thorough investigation. Yadav stated that the senior doctor had exploited the junior doctor under the guise of love, coercing her towards religious conversion, and characterized the situation as “love jihad.”

Yadav further noted that the resident doctor was unaware of her colleague’s marital status and later discovered that his first wife had also converted to another religion. When the victim attempted to distance herself from the situation, the senior doctor allegedly intensified the harassment.

Legal Action and Safety Concerns

Yadav confirmed that an FIR would be filed, leading to the arrest of the accused, and emphasized the Commission’s commitment to pursuing strict legal consequences in court. They will also investigate whether any other individuals were involved in the case.

The victim expressed her desire for justice and protection, voicing concerns for her safety and that of her family while demanding firm legal action against her colleague. Prior to this, a complaint had been submitted to the KGMU proctor regarding the incident. Yadav reassured that the victim has not received any threats since reaching out to the Commission.
