Doctor Rescues Accident Victim in Kottayam

Incident Overview

Kottayam: A doctor swiftly intervened to save a 50-year-old accident victim, offering him a second chance at life through timely cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). This incident took place on Tuesday night after Dr. Ajayakumar S left his home in Enathu to pick up his wife from Mannady, near Adoor in Pathanamthitta.

Accident Details

About a kilometer into the Enathu–Mannady stretch, Dr. Ajayakumar noticed a middle-aged man on a two-wheeler overtaking his car at high speed. Moments later, the rider collided head-on with an autorickshaw coming from the opposite direction. The crash violently threw both the rider and his motorcycle onto the road, as reported by Onmanorama News.

Immediate Response

Recognizing the urgency of the situation, Dr. Ajayakumar parked his car and rushed to assist the unconscious man, later identified as Sreejith, a 50-year-old resident of Mannady. The doctor performed two cycles of CPR, which successfully revived Sreejith moments after the intervention, highlighting the critical importance of immediate medical assistance.

Doctor’s Background

Dr. Ajayakumar, 54, is a medical officer at the Community Health Centre in Kulakkada, Kollam, and has nearly 17 years of experience in the medical field. However, this was the first time he faced a situation requiring roadside intervention. He recalled, “I had seen him overtake my vehicle. He was speeding and not wearing a helmet. The crash happened right in front of me.”

Investigation Findings

According to The Daily, CCTV footage revealed that the two-wheeler had veered into the wrong lane after overtaking Dr. Ajayakumar’s car, resulting in a head-on collision with the autorickshaw. The impact caused the autorickshaw to swerve off the road and crash into a nearby shop. Fortunately, the passengers, including an autorickshaw driver, a woman, and a child, suffered no serious injuries and were able to stand up immediately. Dr. Ajayakumar noted, “The bike rider was the only one lying unconscious. Since the others seemed stable, I rushed straight to him.”

Medical Assistance Provided

Upon checking the victim’s pulse, Dr. Ajayakumar determined that CPR was necessary. He described the chaotic scene, mentioning that many bystanders were present due to a nearby temple festival, but most were unsure how to help. “When I told them I was a doctor and asked for help, they cooperated immediately,” he said. After reviving Sreejith, the doctor requested a cloth from bystanders to control the bleeding and stabilize his fractured right leg.

Aftermath and Ongoing Care

An ambulance soon arrived, and Sreejith was transported to the Taluk Hospital in Adoor before being admitted to the Government Medical College in Kottayam for further treatment. Dr. Ajayakumar noted that Sreejith had also sustained a head injury. The passengers from the autorickshaw were taken to the hospital in a separate vehicle. “I haven’t visited him in person since then, but we stay in touch over the phone, and I regularly inquire about his recovery,” he added.
