Maharashtra Minister’s Assistant Seeks Bail in Doctor’s Suicide Case
Background of the Case
Mumbai: Anant Garje, the personal assistant to Maharashtra minister Pankaja Munde, has sought bail from the sessions court following his arrest for allegedly abetting the suicide of his wife, a doctor. The tragic incident occurred on November 22 last year, when the 28-year-old dentist, employed at the civic-run KEM Hospital, was found hanged in her flat located in Worli, central Mumbai. Garje and the deceased were married in February of the same year.
Legal Proceedings and Allegations
Garje, along with two relatives, has been charged with abetment of suicide and other offenses based on a complaint filed by the father of the deceased. His bail application, submitted through attorney Mangesh Deshmukh before additional sessions judge Rupali Pawar, argues that the allegations against him are “vague.” The plea contends that the case stems from “emotional distress” following the incident.
Garje’s plea highlights that the First Information Report (FIR) lacks any direct or specific acts of abetment or cruelty that could be classified as an offense under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. It asserts that family members have been implicated solely due to a matrimonial dispute, suggesting a misuse of the legal system.
Details of the Bail Application
The application claims the FIR’s allegations are “vague, omnibus, and lacking specific details regarding any date, place, or act that could constitute instigation.” According to Garje, the case against him relies on mere suspicion and assumptions rather than substantive evidence.
His plea points out that there is no independent statement, documentary evidence, or electronic communication linking him to any alleged harassment or the unfortunate death of his wife. It asserts that the FIR indicates “no active instigation by the applicant to the deceased at any point of time,” and emphasizes the absence of medical reports, complaints, or witness statements connecting him to any form of physical assault or cruelty.
Current Status of the Case
The court has requested a response from the prosecution and has postponed the hearing to January 19. In the police complaint, the deceased’s family has alleged that she was subjected to torture and harassment by her husband, which they claim led her to take the extreme step. They have also accused Garje of having an extramarital affair.
