Survey Reveals Insights on Free Time and Physical Activity Among Americans

Study Overview

A recent survey involving 32,000 participants aged 15 and older indicates that a lack of free time is not a primary factor contributing to low physical activity levels in the American population. While the advantages of regular physical activity are well-documented, only approximately 53% of individuals meet the recommended guideline of 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise per week.

Research Methodology

The study utilized the American Time Use Survey (ATUS) conducted by the US Census Bureau, which collects data on daily activities of participants. Activities were classified into 17 categories, including exercise, recreation, and free time. Free time was specifically defined as activities not related to caregiving or self-care, such as sleeping, eating, household chores, shopping, and cooking.

Findings on Free Time and Physical Activity

The researchers assessed the correlation between free time and physical activity levels. Results indicated that the average American enjoys between 4.5 to 5 hours of free time daily. Men averaged 356 minutes of free time per day, dedicating around 24 minutes to physical activity. In contrast, women had an average of 318 minutes of free time, spending only 14 minutes on leisure-related physical activity.

Demographic Insights

The study also highlighted that lower income and education levels were associated with increased screen time for both men and women. Conversely, those with less free time—typically individuals with higher income and education—allocated significantly more time to physical activities.

Screen Time vs. Physical Activity

The findings revealed that a majority of free time is consumed by screen time, with only 5% of women’s free time and 6.6% of men’s free time spent on physical activity.

Expert Recommendations

Dr. Deborah Cohen, the co-author of the study, emphasizes the importance of raising public awareness regarding time usage. She advocates for messages that encourage Americans to reduce screen time to enhance physical activity levels. Dr. Cohen states, “These findings suggest getting Americans to devote at least 20 or 30 minutes each day to physical activity is feasible.”
