A recent study published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition explored the acute effects of these supplements on resting metabolism and exercise performance among recreationally active females. The study involved 15 participants aged 19 to 23 in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled design.

They then underwent two experimental sessions to evaluate resting energy expenditure, heart rate, and blood pressure after consuming either a pre-workout supplement or a placebo. Results of the Study
Findings indicated that pre-workout supplements significantly improved exercise performance. Participants experienced acute increases in resting energy expenditure for up to 60 minutes post-consumption. Moreover, the intake of MIPS led to enhanced resting metabolism and a rise in diastolic blood pressure. Improvements were noted in upper body muscular endurance and anaerobic capacity, with participants reporting higher levels of focus during high-intensity exercises.

The study revealed that those who consumed the pre-workout supplements showed better performance in bench press and treadmill activities compared to the placebo group.
Potential Side Effects and Cautions
While the researchers did not observe adverse effects on heart rate or systolic blood pressure, some side effects such as facial flushing, tingling in the hands, and jitteriness were reported. These reactions are commonly associated with caffeine, a primary ingredient in these supplements. The increase in diastolic blood pressure suggests that individuals with cardiovascular disease risk factors should approach these supplements with caution.
