Violence Against Medical Professionals in Delhi

Incident Overview

In a distressing event involving violence against healthcare workers, a third-year postgraduate resident doctor from the pediatric department at ESI Hospital, Basaidarapur, Delhi, reported being verbally abused, physically assaulted, and nearly strangled by a patient’s attendants while on duty. The doctor incurred a serious head injury and experienced considerable physical and mental trauma from the incident.

Details of the Assault

As per the written complaint filed by the doctor, the assault occurred on January 17, 2026, around 10 a.m. While attending to children in the pediatric ward, the doctor noticed that a patient and the patient’s medical file were missing. He later learned that the patient had been moved to the sampling room for routine tests.

After some time, the patient was returned to the ward by the attendant, accompanied by two others, including the patient’s wife. Following their arrival, the attendant initiated a dispute over the earlier incident. The complaint states that three individuals—comprised of a man, the patient’s parents, and another person—began to verbally abuse the doctor, falsely accusing him of neglect despite the patient receiving continuous medical care for three days.

When the doctor requested that they leave the ward, security guards arrived. However, as the doctor confronted the attendees about their abusive behavior, the situation escalated into violence. The accused allegedly surrounded and physically restrained the doctor, with the patient’s parents attempting to strangle him using his stethoscope. Another attendant reportedly assaulted him by pulling his hair from behind.

Consequences of the Attack

The doctor sustained a head injury and suffered significant physical and mental trauma as a result of the attack. In his complaint, he classified the incident as criminal intimidation, verbal abuse, physical assault on a public servant on duty, an attempt to cause grievous harm, obstruction of official medical duties, and violence within hospital premises.

Reactions and Demands for Action

The Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) condemned the incident, calling for strict action against the perpetrators and justice for the assaulted doctor. In a post on social media platform X, the association stated, “A postgraduate student at ESI Basai Darapur Hospital, Delhi, was physically assaulted by relatives of a patient. Every other day, violence against doctors is increasing & the government is still not thinking of any bill for the protection of CovidWarriors. We demand strict action.”

Similarly, the Democratic Medical Association (DMA) also expressed condemnation. They posted on X, stating, “Another doctor assaulted. Another red line crossed. Hospitals are meant for healing, not violence. We demand immediate action and accountability. Stand with doctors. Raise your voice. Show your outrage.”

Dr. Mohammad Momin Khan, Vice President of the All India Medical Students’ Association (AIMSA), J&K, also reacted, saying, “Horrible. If doctors are not safe inside hospitals, where are they? We Demand Urgent Intervention.”
