Menopause is a significant phase in the reproductive lives of about half of the world’s population, usually marked by various misconceptions. This is often due to limitations in social and education systems that impede access to accurate and comprehensive information. So, what essential aspects about menopause should everyone understand? In our discussion today, we delve into this topic with the help of an expert guest.

Menopause is an inevitable biological process for everyone with a uterus. However, despite increasing awareness about menopause and its preceding stage – perimenopause, there’s still a plethora of misinformation and misconceptions surrounding these critical life phases.

A 2021 survey, involving over 800 postmenopausal participants in the United Kingdom, revealed that more than 90% had not received any menopause-related education in school. When asked about their menopause experiences, many respondents described it as a “nightmare,” potentially exacerbated by their lack of preparedness in handling the symptoms.

Perimenopause can often catch people off guard, its symptoms mimicking or aggravating various other health conditions. Moreover, menopause symptoms, including hot flashes and chronic insomnia, can significantly impact an individual’s quality of life in unpredictable and sometimes severe ways. So, what is essential to know about this life stage, and how can one find the most suitable support and resources tailored to their specific needs?

In this instance of our series ‘In Conversation,’ we seek answers to these questions and more with Prof. Kate Clancy, PhD, a professor of anthropology at the University of Illinois. As a human reproductive ecologist who specializes in uterine health and the health of menstruating individuals, Clancy offers a unique perspective.

Clancy, with her special interest in feminist science and feminist science studies and author of ‘Period: The Real Story of Menstruation,’ helps us identify five crucial aspects everyone should comprehend about menopause.
