Nagpur Doctor Targeted in Honeytrap and Blackmail Scheme

Arrests Made in Connection with Extortion Case

Seven individuals, believed to be part of a criminal gang, have been apprehended for allegedly honeytrapping and blackmailing a 62-year-old doctor. The doctor, who serves as the Head of a Department at a prominent hospital in Nagpur, was coerced into paying Rs 1.78 lakh. The suspects reportedly threatened to release explicit videos of him and falsely accuse him of rape if he did not comply.

Details of the Incident

The city crime branch has arrested seven members of the gang, while six additional suspects remain under investigation. Among the accused are four women, including a journalist, who participated in the elaborate scheme. Three individuals were captured when they arrived to collect payment. Authorities have seized Rs 1,500 in cash and mobile phones valued at Rs 1.56 lakh from the suspects.

How the Honeytrap Unfolded

According to the Nagpur City Police Crime Branch, the doctor was targeted in September while visiting Gondia to see a friend. He was allegedly enticed by the gang with promises of sexual encounters, during which they secretly recorded explicit images and videos. Posing as police officers from Gondia, the gang threatened him with arrest and public disgrace, using the recordings as leverage for blackmail.

In one instance, two members of the gang forced the doctor to withdraw Rs 1 lakh from an ATM. Despite returning to Nagpur, the harassment persisted, leading him to transfer money to various bank accounts, culminating in a total extortion of approximately Rs 1.78 lakh.

Escalation of Threats

The situation escalated when a relative of one of the gang members caused a disturbance at the hospital, while others continued to threaten the doctor with false rape allegations. Initially, the gang demanded Rs 2 crore to prevent the release of the explicit content but later attempted to negotiate a settlement for Rs 60 lakh.

Police Intervention

Unable to withstand the pressure, the doctor sought assistance from the police on December 4, 2025, filing a formal complaint. In response, law enforcement set a trap, instructing the doctor to deliver an initial payment of Rs 3 lakh at a hotel, where three suspects were apprehended.

Under the direction of ACP (Crime Branch) Abhijit Patil, a special team led by PI Dilip Chandan acted swiftly. When the suspects refused the partial payment and insisted on the full Rs 60 lakh, the police intervened, resulting in their arrest. Subsequent interrogations led to the capture of the remaining four gang members.

Legal Proceedings

A case has been filed at the Tehsil Police Station, invoking relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Sections 308(2) for extortion, 61(2) for criminal conspiracy, and 3(5) for joint liability.
