Incident at Digha Checkpoint Involving NMCH Doctor
Assault Allegations Against Police Officers
A doctor from Nalanda Medical College and Hospital (NMCH), Patna, was reportedly injured during an altercation with police officers at the Digha checkpoint. The physician has alleged that the incident occurred after he objected to police allowing a truck, which was traveling in the wrong direction, to pass through the checkpoint, allegedly in exchange for a bribe.
Details of the Incident
According to the doctor, six police personnel assaulted him and his driver during the confrontation. The driver sustained injuries, including a bleeding nose, and there were reportedly nail marks on his neck. Following the incident, the doctor lodged a formal complaint against the involved officers, prompting an ongoing investigation.
The Bhaskar news report indicated that the incident transpired on Sunday night while the doctor and his driver were navigating the Digha checkpoint. Their vehicle became obstructed when a truck approached from the opposite direction. An argument ensued when the driver of the doctor’s car requested the truck driver to reverse. The situation escalated in the presence of Sub-Inspector (SI) Upendra Sah, who allegedly became aggressive.
Escalation of Violence
The doctor accused the police of facilitating the truck’s passage after accepting a bribe. As tensions rose, SI Sah reportedly grabbed the driver’s collar and shouted at him, leading to an outbreak of violence. The policemen allegedly began to assault the driver, prompting the doctor to intervene, resulting in him also being attacked.
The doctor further claimed that the police not only inflicted physical harm but also stole Rs 22,000 in cash and the driver’s mobile phone.
Response and Ongoing Investigation
After the altercation, the doctor and his driver went to the Digha police station to file a complaint. However, they alleged that they were made to wait for two hours before any action was taken. Although the police returned the mobile phone, they denied taking any cash.
Both parties have filed complaints against each other, and the police are in the process of interviewing witnesses and reviewing CCTV footage from the scene.
SDPO-2 Mohibulla Ansari stated, “Applications have been received from both parties. The matter is under investigation. Strict action will be taken if anyone is found guilty.”
