Investigation into Sexual Harassment Case at KGMU
Details of the Allegations
The inquiry into an alleged sexual harassment case at King George’s Medical University (KGMU) in Lucknow has uncovered serious accusations against a doctor. A female doctor has claimed that she was pressured to convert her religion for marriage, which ultimately led her to attempt suicide. The investigation has resulted in the arrest of the parents of the accused doctor, while the primary suspect remains at large.
Arrests and Ongoing Search
On Monday, police apprehended the parents of the accused from a rented residence in Thakurganj, citing their involvement in the alleged religious conversion and the miscarriage of two female medical students—one from KGMU and another from Agra Medical College. The accused doctor has been suspended and faces severe allegations, including sexual exploitation and blackmail. Reports indicate that he has been untraceable for several days, with his mobile phone switched off and police notices going unanswered. Authorities suspect he may have fled to Uttarakhand and have reached out to local police there to monitor his movements.
Victim’s Experience
The affected female doctor, who identifies as Hindu, claims that her male colleague, of the Muslim faith, emotionally manipulated her and coerced her into converting to Islam for marriage. After she declined his proposal, he allegedly continued to harass her, leading to significant mental distress and her suicide attempt. On December 27, she reportedly consumed a large number of pills in her hostel room at KGMU, necessitating an urgent transfer to the Trauma Centre and later to the Critical Care Management ICU for further treatment.
Background on the Accused
It has come to light that the accused doctor married a classmate in February after she allegedly converted her religion. Both individuals were students at Agra Medical College prior to their marriage. A police officer informed TOI that the two victims have provided written statements before a magistrate, claiming they were forcibly converted, sexually exploited, and suffered miscarriages, implicating both the KGMU doctor and his parents.
Reward for Capture
Initially, law enforcement announced a reward of Rs 25,000 for information leading to the arrest of the accused doctor, which was later increased to Rs 50,000 as the search continues.
