New Research on Delaying Rheumatoid Arthritis Onset
Current Statistics and Understanding of Rheumatoid Arthritis
As of 2021, approximately 17.9 million individuals globally were diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). This autoimmune condition leads to inflammation, pain, and swelling in the joints. While the precise cause of RA remains elusive, researchers suggest that various factors, including genetic predisposition and environmental influences such as smoking, contribute to its risk.
Study Findings on Preventive Treatment
Currently, there is no established method to prevent rheumatoid arthritis, particularly for those with a family history of the disease. However, a recent study published in the journal The Lancet Rheumatology indicates that administering rheumatoid arthritis-specific medication to individuals identified as high-risk may significantly delay the onset of the disease by several years.
