Professor Vishali Gupta Receives Gold Medal from IUSG

A Prestigious Recognition

In a significant milestone, Professor Vishali Gupta from the Advanced Eye Centre at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education & Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh has been honored with a gold medal by the International Uveitis Study Group (IUSG). This esteemed global society comprises leading experts in ocular inflammation.

About the International Uveitis Study Group

The IUSG, which has a highly selective membership of around 150 specialists worldwide, presents this award every four years to a researcher who has shown exceptional excellence and influence in the field of uveitis. According to a statement from PGIMER, this accolade is one of the most competitive in the specialty, determined through a meticulous two-stage voting process by all society members.

Upcoming Award Ceremony

Professor Gupta is set to officially receive the award and deliver the gold medal lecture at the IUSG meeting scheduled for July 2026 in Tubingen, Germany. This recognition is particularly noteworthy as it marks the first occasion that an Indian-trained and India-based clinician-scientist has received this distinction since the IUSG’s establishment.

Significance of the Award

In an interview with The Indian Express, Gupta emphasized the importance of this recognition, stating that it validates her work conducted entirely in India. “Everything I have done, every bit of my training and research, has been here,” she remarked. She highlighted a common perception that foreign training is essential for acknowledgment, stating, “For me, being acknowledged for work done in India is the most meaningful part of this honor.”

Gratitude and Acknowledgements

Gupta expressed her heartfelt appreciation to her mentor, Professor Amod Gupta, the former Head of the Department of Ophthalmology at PGIMER, for his invaluable guidance. She also thanked PGIMER Chandigarh for providing the foundational support and global platform that facilitated her academic advancement.
