Puducherry Doctor Arrested for Alleged Fraud

Background of the Case

A government doctor in Puducherry has been apprehended by local police on charges of defrauding an auxiliary nurse midwife (ANM) of Rs. 1 crore and misappropriating six sovereigns of gold jewelry. The complainant, employed at a government primary health center in Ariankuppam, claimed she entered a financial agreement with the doctor, who is affiliated with the Indira Gandhi Government General Hospital and Postgraduate Institute. She alleged that he promised to sell her a plot of land within the town limits.

Details of the Allegations

According to reports from the Times of India, the complainant transferred ₹1 crore in three online installments to the bank account of the doctor’s wife during July 2024. Additionally, she alleged that the doctor had taken six sovereigns of gold jewelry from her in July 2023, which were never returned or accounted for. Following the failed property transaction, the complainant and her husband repeatedly visited the doctor’s residence and clinic to request repayment of the funds and the recovery of the jewelry.

Incident of Harassment

During their final encounter, the complainant accused the doctor of abusing and harassing her. This prompted her to file a formal police complaint. In response to her allegations, the Ariankuppam police initiated a case under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Sections 79 (insulting the modesty of a woman), 318(2) (cheating), and 351(2) (criminal intimidation). The doctor was subsequently arrested and placed in judicial custody.

Related Cases of Fraud

This incident is not isolated, as Medic Helpline previously reported a similar case where a young woman doctor was allegedly defrauded of Rs 2.09 lakh by cybercriminals impersonating bank officials. These criminals claimed they needed to update her credit card details. Upon realizing she had been scammed, the doctor reported the incident to the police and filed a formal complaint.
