Fake Doctor Arrested After Rickshaw Driver’s Death in Mumbai
Incident Overview
Mumbai police have arrested a fake doctor linked to the death of an auto rickshaw driver in the Chembur area. The accused is alleged to have caused the death by administering unauthorized medicines and an injection.
Background of the Case
Reports indicate that the arrest followed a complaint by the victim’s wife, who approached the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). Investigations revealed that the accused lacked a medical degree and proper qualifications, making him unauthorized to treat patients.
Details of the Treatment
Medic Helpline had earlier reported on the incident involving a 42-year-old rickshaw driver who died after receiving treatment at the accused’s clinic. The individual, operating under the name of Dr. Vishwakarma, was running a clinic on Sion–Trombay Road in Chembur. The authorities have charged him under the Maharashtra Medical Practitioners Act, 1961, as well as sections pertaining to causing death by rash or negligent act, which carries a potential imprisonment of up to five years.
Victim’s Medical History
The case was initiated after Sharmiladevi Nantun Jha, the wife of the deceased driver Nantun Jha, filed a complaint. She stated that her husband sought treatment after experiencing discomfort following a molar extraction at Lions Club Charitable Trust, Chembur, on December 7. Despite his pain, he continued to work that night.
The next day, when his condition worsened, Sharmiladevi took him to “Om Clinic” in Suman Nagar, where Dr. Vishwakarma examined him. Reports indicate that the accused injected her husband near the waist and prescribed tablets, charging Rs 400 for the treatment.
Aftermath and Family’s Response
Shortly after returning home, the victim experienced severe breathing difficulties. Alarmed, the family took him back to the clinic, but they were advised to transfer him to another facility. Upon arrival at Sion Hospital, he was declared dead.
Following the incident, the family confronted the accused about the treatment administered, but he reportedly avoided their inquiries. Police confirmed that the injections and medications were provided illegally, without any medical qualifications.
Community Concerns
Local residents have expressed concerns, stating that the accused had been operating illegally in the area for years, allegedly bribing certain officials to maintain his clinic’s operations without oversight.
