Pune: Dr. Subhash Madhav Nargolkar, a distinguished obstetrician and gynaecologist known for his innovative approaches in instrumental delivery techniques in India, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 79. His extensive five-decade career significantly contributed to women’s health, earning him immense respect within the medical community.
Legacy in Healthcare
Dr. Nargolkar managed one of Pune’s oldest private OB-GYN hospitals and was celebrated for his meticulous clinical practice, academic integrity, and unwavering commitment to patient care. As a founder fellow of the Indian College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (ICOG), which is the academic arm of the Federation of Obstetric and Gynaecological Societies of India (FOGSI), he held various key positions, including vice-president. He was also a life member of numerous national medical organizations and played a vital role in promoting safer childbirth practices in India.
Educational Background and Contributions
A graduate of BJ Medical College, Dr. Nargolkar served as a registrar at Sassoon General Hospital before furthering his training in Mumbai and the UK. He later worked as a consultant obstetrician-gynaecologist at Indira Maternity Home located on Jangali Maharaj Road.
Dr. Nargolkar dedicated over 25 years to researching obstetric forceps, culminating in the publication of his acclaimed monograph “Hay’s Obstetric Forceps,” which outlined his modifications aimed at enhancing safety during difficult deliveries. His expertise earned him invitations to lecture at international congresses across the UK, USA, Canada, Singapore, Israel, and Australia.

Survived By Family
Dr. Nargolkar is survived by his wife, Dr. Ranjana Nargolkar, their daughters Gauri and Radhika, son Rohit, and his grandchildren. A condolence meeting in his honor is scheduled to take place at PYC Hindu Gymkhana (AI Hall) in Deccan at 6 pm on December 2, as noted by his daughter Gauri.
