Srinagar Achieves Surgical Milestone with Scar-Free Thyroid Surgery

Significant Advancement in Surgical Capabilities

Srinagar’s Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) has accomplished a significant surgical milestone by successfully performing a groundbreaking minimally invasive, scar-free thyroid surgery. This achievement, shared by officials on Friday, highlights SKIMS’ leadership in providing advanced patient care in the region.

Pioneering Procedure Details

According to reports from UNI, the innovative surgery was conducted by the Department of General and Minimal Invasive Surgery, under the guidance of Dr. Ajaz Ahmad Malik, Head of the Department and the Endocrine & Breast Surgery Division. The procedure employed a sophisticated remote-access technique to remove the thyroid gland without leaving any visible scars on the patient’s neck.

Recognition and Benefits of the Procedure

This method represents a significant leap forward in both minimally invasive and laparoscopic surgical techniques. It has received extensive recognition at state and national surgical forums for its precision, reduced postoperative trauma, and improved patient recovery outcomes, as noted by a spokesperson from SKIMS.

Commitment to Innovation and Patient Care

M. Ashraf Ganie, Director of SKIMS, stressed the importance of such innovative advancements in patient care. He remarked, “Introducing scar-free, minimally invasive thyroid surgery in the region not only elevates our clinical capabilities but also brings world-class surgical care closer to the people of Jammu and Kashmir, in line with our defined objective of providing advanced, equitable, and patient-centric healthcare.”

Enhancing Drug Safety and Patient Care

In a related initiative, SKIMS has established a Pharmacovigilance Committee aimed at improving drug safety and patient care. This committee will monitor and report Adverse Drug Reactions (ADRs) and perform benefit-risk assessments of medications. A similar committee has also been created at SKIMS Medical College and Hospital in Bemina, with both committees chaired by the respective Medical Superintendents and featuring doctors from various departments as members.

Concerns Over Working Conditions

In addition, resident doctors in Jammu and Kashmir have expressed concerns regarding inhumane working conditions, shedding light on the ongoing challenges faced within the healthcare sector.
