Understanding Food Allergies in Adults

Research on Food Allergy Prevalence

Food allergies in children have been extensively studied. However, recent investigations shed light on the prevalence and severity of food allergies in adults. While many children may outgrow their food allergies, some individuals continue to experience these conditions into adulthood.

Differences Between Food Allergies and Food Intolerances

It is crucial to differentiate food allergies from food intolerances. Food allergies trigger a specific immune response, leading to various allergic symptoms. These reactions can manifest in several ways, including tingling or itching sensations in the mouth, skin reactions like hives, swelling of the mouth or face, and difficulty breathing.

Survey Findings by Gupta and Colleagues

To better understand the adult population’s experience with food allergies, Gupta and colleagues conducted a cross-sectional survey from October 2015 to September 2016. The results, published in JAMA Network Open, aimed to provide a national representation of food allergies among American adults.

Self-Diagnosed Allergies

The survey revealed that many reported allergies were self-diagnosed. The researchers only considered these self-reports definitive when participants described symptoms consistent with IgE-mediated reactions.

Statistics on Adult Food Allergies

The study identified over 26 million American adults living with food allergies, accounting for approximately 10.8% of the adult population. Interestingly, 19% of adults believe they have a food allergy, and nearly half of those with food allergies reported that their conditions began in adulthood.

Conclusion and Recommendations

The findings indicate that food allergies are both common and severe, often beginning in adulthood. Gupta and colleagues emphasize the importance of adults seeking proper diagnostic tests and treatment instead of relying on self-diagnosis. This approach can help prevent unnecessary food avoidance and ensure a better quality of life.
