Understanding Alcohol and Heart Disease

The Link Between Alcohol and Heart Health

Alcohol consumption is closely associated with heart disease. It is important to understand recommended limits for both men and women to maintain heart health.

Recommendations for Alcohol Consumption

For Men

Men are advised to limit their alcohol intake to 17 standard drinks per week. This equates to approximately 170 grams (or 210 mls) of pure alcohol. It is recommended to spread these drinks over the week and include at least two to three alcohol-free days.

For Women

Women should aim for a maximum of 11 standard drinks per week, which is around 110 grams (or 140 mls) of pure alcohol. Similar to men, women should also distribute their drinking across the week and have two to three alcohol-free days.

Impacts of Excessive Alcohol Consumption

Consuming excessive amounts of alcohol can have detrimental effects on heart health. Key concerns include:
– Increased blood pressure
– Risk of developing cardiomyopathy
