Karnataka Medical Student Commits Suicide in Hostel

Incident Overview

In a heartbreaking incident, a 25-year-old medical student from the Dharwad Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (DIMHANS) took her own life by hanging in her hostel room in Karnataka. The student, a resident of Shivamogga, was discovered by her roommate on Wednesday morning.

Details from DIMHANS

Dr. Arunkumar C, Director of DIMHANS, stated that the student was pursuing a postgraduate degree in MD Psychiatry. She had recently moved into the hostel after gaining admission on January 1st. According to Dr. Arunkumar, she had expressed a loss of interest in her studies, prompting her parents to visit and encourage her to continue her education. “We do not know what exactly transpired between them. We are shocked to know about her suicide,” he remarked, noting that her roommate was the one who alerted the college staff and police upon discovering her body.

Family’s Response

The victim’s mother, an anatomy professor, emphasized that her daughter had taken admission willingly and faced no familial pressure. “After getting admission, she communicated her lack of interest in pursuing the course. We believed she was experiencing typical challenges faced by students in the early days of their postgraduate studies. We visited her in Dharwad and reassured her that things would improve,” she explained. Tragically, the family returned to Shivamogga the day before her death.

Police Investigation

Inspector PR Gangenhalli of the Dharwad Sub-Urban Police Station reported that the victim’s parents confirmed she had lost interest in her studies and made the decision to end her life despite their counseling efforts. “We have registered a case and completed all necessary formalities, including the post-mortem examination,” he added.

Community Impact

The loss of the only daughter has left the family devastated. This incident highlights the mental health challenges faced by students in high-pressure academic environments.
